# convert photo to line art using color dodge
This is a nifty trick to quickly turn a photo into a pencil drawing line art.
Open image in Photoshop.
Make a copy of the image layer so you can keep the original intact. CMD/CTRL-J.
Convert the copied layer to grayscale. Create a Black & White Adjustment Layer and tweak as needed to get a nice high-contrast look. Then Layer > Merge Down (CMD/CTRL-E) to apply the effect to your image layer.
Make a copy of the grayscale image layer. CMD/CTRL-J.
On the top grayscale image layer, set the Blending Mode to Color Dodge. Then Invert the layer CMD/CTRL-I. Your image should turn completely white.
On the top grayscale layer, choose Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Adjust the Radius as needed to get the look you want. Higher Radius creates stronger effect. Too high and you get a cool photocopy effect.
Merge the two grayscale layers by choosing the top grayscale layer and clicking CMD/CTRL-E.

In the Levels graph, slide the Left/Black arrow to darken the effect. Slide the Right/White arrow to wash out the light tones. Slide the middle arrow to minimize the intensity. Season to taste.
To further intensify the effect, change the Adjustment Layer Blend Mode to Multiply.
