# expand the scope Too many limitations and rules can be stifling to creative explorations. Sometimes you need to break a few of the imposed rules to start thinking in new ways. Opening up possibilities leads to new ideas. Sometimes breaking a few rules during the creative exploration phase leads to new functional ideas that can be adapted when those "broken" rules are reinstituted. This is the reason you want to to be more [[play|playful]] with [[divergent thinking]] during the early stages of the design process.
