# the double diamond process
A popular process by the [Design Council](https://www.designcouncil.org.uk/our-resources/framework-for-innovation/), a group formed in Britain by Winston Churchill for post-war recovery. The famous double diamond separates the creative process into [[divergent thinking]] phases and [[convergent thinking]] phases to explore solutions to a problem.
The first diamond represents the [[preparation]] stages of understanding and defining the problem. It is the **problem** phase. This is where you **Discover** and **Define** the challenge.
The second diamond represents the creative design process of [[ideation]] and [[prototype|prototyping]], as well as delivery and implementation of the final product. It is the **solution** phase. This is where you **Develop** and **Deliver** the solution.

As with all process frameworks, this is not a linear flow. Note the emphasis on [[iteration]] and frequently looping back to previous steps. There is also a big focus on collaboration and communication between all stakeholders through the process.
## an alternative model
While the Double Diamond model is quite ubiquitous in the design world, there is an alternative model that puts the product delivery in-between the two diamonds. A product launch is only the first phase of a project with ongoing testing and revision over the life-cycle of the product. This works especially well with web, digital app, and software-as-a-service projects that are constantly being revised and updated.
