# five types of motion
Film and animation is essentially a series of still images viewed in rapid succession. The difference between one image and the next creates the illusion of motion. These differences can be from changes in camera position or movement or character movement within the scene.
The amount of difference in each successive image is the rate of motion or change. This is known as **Tempo**.
Here are five basic types of motion often referenced in time-based media.
## static or zero-motion

When objects are not moving. Often called a **Hold**. Works well to show stasis before or after an action. Also needed as a contrast for when other objects are in motion to help indicate speed.

## constant motion
![[Pasted image 20221016140023.png]]
When objects are moving at a constant, unchanging speed. The distance of the objects movement is the same from frame to frame. It is often called **Linear Motion**. This is the default for most animation systems.
---
## increasing or accelerating motion

An accelerating motion moving from a stop and increasing in speed. The move in each frame is always greater than the move in the previous frame. This is known as an **Ease In**.

## decreasing or decelerating motion

A decelerating motion, the opposite of increasing motion. The move in each frame is smaller than previous frames. This is known as an **Ease Out**.

## irregular motion

A random movement that makes it impossible for the audience to predict the size of the movement from the previous frame. It appears erratic, capricious, nervous, or frightened.
