# rigging
---
Rigging in animation is the idea of building a defined structure for your elements, much like a skeleton with solid bones and hinged joints. The tools are most commonly found in 3D applications like Autodesk Maya, however you can do some of this work for 2D animation in After Effects.
After Effects has decent tools for building rigged animations using [[puppet tool animation|Puppet Warp]], although the toolset is fairly limited. A free plugin called [Duik](https://rxlaboratory.org/tools/duik/) adds a more complex set of rigging tools like [bones](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skeletal_animation) and [inverse kinematics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inverse_kinematics#:~:text=collision%20avoidance.-,Inverse%20kinematics%20and%203D%20animation,-%5Bedit%5D). These tools give you much more control over your animation.
For an even more advanced set of 2D animation tools, you might want to consider using [Adobe Animate](https://www.adobe.com/products/animate.html), which has all of the cool tools already built in.
