# physical lighting in stager
Lighting is a powerful tool in building three-dimensional worlds. Color, intensity, and location of lights can drastically affect the feel of a space. Shadows define form and help define depth. It is the lighting and shadows that let us know where we are in a space.
This page shows you how create and adjust individual Physical Lights in Stager. You can also to set up the basic [[stager environment lighting|Environment Lighting]].
## physical lights
There are four types of physical lights. Each has its own characteristics and options.
- **Point light** - A light originating from a center point. Think traditional lightbulb.
- **Spot light** - A light originating from a center point, but constrained into a directional. Think flashlight.
- **Area light** - A rectangular surface light. Think a television or laptop screen.
- **Directional light** - A global light far in the distance moving in a perpendicular line. Think sun.

## position the light
Lights come into your scene just like geometry so you can either select the light object in the scene or using the Scene panel to choose the light.
Use the regular **Transform** tools to manipulate the light position. These Transforms include **Move** (W), **Rotate** (E), and **Scale** (R). Alternatively, you can adjust settings using sliders and values in the **Transform** submenu of the **Properties** panel.

## light properties
Each light has a variety of properties that can be adjusted. Some properties are general and apply to all lights, while others are specific to each light type.
