# quick lighting setup
**add some light and shadows**
We will get into more advanced lighting eventually. For now, here’s a quick basic lighting setup.
### create skydome light
1. Switch to the **Arnold** tab on the Shelf.
2. In the first group of icons is the **Arnold Lights**. Choose the icon on the right of that group. It looks like a sunrise. Hovering over the icon, the pop-up label says **Create Physical Sky**. In the Outliner will be a new **aiSkyDomeLight**.
### activate panel rendering
1. In the camera/persp panel, go to the panel pull-down for **Renderer > Arnold** and press the dialog box button.
2. In the floating pop-up, click the **red Play button** on the right side.
3. The panel has a row of icons, choose the **lightbulb** to use lights and the **ball shadow** right next to it to turn on shadows.
4. The panel should start rendering the scene with lighting and shadows. It will be blurry and grainy but will slowly come into focus as the panel renders.
### temperature-based lighting
Use temperature-based lighting to get a quick lighting setup that ranges from warm to neutral to cool light.
1. In the Attribute Editor, switch to the **aiSkyDomeLightShape** tab
2. Scroll down to **SkyDomeLight Attributes** and turn on the **Use Color Temperature** checkbox.
3. Slide the slider to left for warm color and to the right for cool color. Neutral white is in the middle of the slider.
4. Turn up the **Intensity** to brighten your sunshine.
5. In the same section you can adjust the **Shadow Color**, if you want.
### more advanced color lighting
This setup offers more advanced options. Turn off the Use Color Temperature checkbox to activate. This is the default option for a Physical Sky.
Check out the [Physical Sky for Arnold page](https://docs.arnoldrenderer.com/display/A5AFMUG/Physical+Sky) to learn how all the settings affect your rendering.
1. In the Attribute Editor, switch to the **aiPhysicalSky** tab
2. There are a bunch of options you can tweak. Here are the main options:
1. **Color: Sky tint** and **Sun tint** and **Ground Albedo** allow you tweak different colors independently
2. **Brighten:** increasing **Intensity** will brighten the lights
3. **Shadow sharpness:** higher **Turbidity** and **Sun Size** will soften the shadow edges
4. **Sun position: Azimuth** and **Elevation** move the sun around your model
### rendering
When you are ready to render, make sure you change the **Render Using:** to **Arnold Rendering**.
