# extrude tool
The Extrude Tool is a powerful way to quickly add or remove sections of a mesh to rough in a complex mass. It allows you to push and pull individual components of a mesh, such as faces and edges. This is one of the most fundamental ways of modeling in 3D.
Select the faces you would like to extrude and activate the tool by pressing **Ctrl-E**. Can also activate by pressing the **Extrude button** on the menu bar or using pulldown menus for **Edit Mesh > Extrude**. You can also find it on the **Modeling Toolkit** menu.
Use the gizmo to push or pull the faces in or out as needed.

You can use the floating menu to adjust the number of divisions the new mass will have. You can change the number in the menu and then push/pull the gizmo and the divisions will update on the model.
The **Keep Faces Together** option works well when two faces share a common edge. With the option Off, the faces will extrude separately along their own axis. With the option On, the faces will stay connected as they are extruded. The above image is set to Off and the one below is set to On.

By default, the Extrusion will flow along the local axis of the faces you are extruding. You can also change the extrusion to the world axis by hitting the little cyan toggle in the upper-right corner of the gizmo.
Finally, you can quickly rotate the extrusion by clicking the big cyan circle around the gizmo. This is a good for getting twists and turns along the extrusion. You can also use the colored arrows and boxes to move and scale the extrusion. Be careful, you can do some really wild destruction when fiddling with these tools.
